The Paramount chief of the Talensi traditional area, Tongraan kugblisong Nanlebegtang, has warned both licensed small scale miners and illegal miners in the area to stop mining with immediate effect.
He made this known in a press conference at his palace in Tongo, in which he called on the Minerals Commission to help him sanitise mining within his traditional area.
TV3’s Upper East correspondent Tanko Mohammed Rabiu reports that the Tongraan’s call is to support the ultimatum given by the Lands and Natural Resources Minister to illegal miners.
The Paramount chief of Talensi traditional area maintained that mining activities have destroyed water bodies, trees such as she but trees, dawadawa trees and many more, noting the havoc caused by chemicals like mercury and cyanide in the area.
These miners engaged in surface mining, which he said has destroyed the top soil of most of the arable lands there affecting farming activities.
It is based on these and other reasons he ordered that all mining activities should cease with immediate effect in the area.
