FIFA has just released the 2017 Ballon d’Or nominees list, and football fans all over the world have been talking! This year’s FIFA Ballon d’Or Award nomination, just like other previous years come with some few surprises and new issues of discussion.
As usual, Real Madrid and Barcelona stars, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi rank high in the list having lifted the trophy the highest number of times more than any other player in the history of the awards. Messi has scored over 500 goals for Barcelona, while Ronaldo has netted over 400 times for Real.
But there are high chances that C. Ronaldo who is the defending champion will retain the crown this season, having helped Real Madrid sweep every competition – La Liga, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cupa and the Spanish Super Cup, in the just ended season.
If this happens, the Portuguese would tie with Messi who has won the World Men’s Best Player Award five good times.
However, other stars including Barcelona’s Luiz Suarez, PSG’s new record signing Neymar, Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon and teammate Paulo Dybala, and former Juventus player Leonardo Bonucci, all made the list.

Voting for the FIFA Best Men’s Player (Ballon D’Or Award) will last from 21st August to 7th September. Within this period, the four main stakeholders involved in football – national team coaches, captains, selected media and fans will make their choices of players to determine who goes home with the prestigious trophy.
The grande finale will subsequently come off on Monday, 23rd October, where the winners will be crowned at a colourful event.
