Former President John Dramani Mahama has waded into the alleged mass dismissal claim of public sector workers in the country by the current government describing it as a bad precedence.
According to him, the dismissed workers are all citizens of the country and like all Ghanaians have rights which must be protected.
President Akufo-Addo has in the last five months been accused sacking about 13,000 public sector workers.
The dismissed public servants, most of who were hired during the eight-year rule of the National Democratic Congress administration, functionaries of the NDC claim, have been shown the exit in fulfillment of the NPP government’s policy to dispense with the services of government workers suspected of being sympathizers of the NDC and, were employed under the Mahama administration.
Senior members of the governing party are on record to have openly threatened the replacement of suspected NDC public servants with their (NPP) supporters.
Leading members of the NPP including Minister of Energy, Boakye Agyarko; Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong; Chief of Staff, Mrs Akosua Frema Opare-Osei among others are alleged to be advising President Akufo-Addo to replace all public sector workers suspected of being sympathizers of the NDC with members of the New Patriotic Party.
In commemoration of May Day this year, the Minority in Parliament has chastised the Akufo-Addo administration for allegedly sacking workers recruited under the erstwhile National Democratic Congress (NDC) government under various pretexts.
It said the country continues to witness unfortunately obscene mass worker transfers, forced resignations, and politically motivated ‘proceed on leave’ directives and unlawful termination of engagements within the public and civil service under the President Nana Akufo-Addo leadership.
This the minority observed is in sharp contrast to promises prior to assumption of power to confidently malaise the labour front in Ghana through improved wages, reduced cost of living, increased job opportunities, with a value addition in industrialisation to create jobs with good pay across Ghana, while maintaining a safe and peaceful worker environment necessary for the progressive programmes and policies that the NPP have for the people of Ghana.
