A group of fishermen numbering about 200 on Friday interrupted a programme organised by the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mrs Elizabeth Afoley Quaye to inaugurate a fisheries watch volunteers group at Ada in the Greater Accra Region.
The volunteer group was formed purposely to help prevent the use of unauthorized fishing gears, such as mono-filament nets, light fishing, use of poisonous substances and explosives in fishing among others.
The rioters claimed they were not consulted by the stakeholders before forming the volunteer group and therefore went on rampage, destroying canopies and chairs at the venue.
It took the police over an hour to calm the situation before the event finally took place.
Mr Enoch Ayittey Tawiah, a former Assembly member and a fisherman, told Graphic Online, the fishermen were not against the formation of the group but rather want to be part of the decision making process.
He said the ministry should carry out enough education before implementing the programme.
