Malta’s President, Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, and her husband Edgar Preca arrived in Accra on Tuesday for a three-day state visit aimed at augmenting ties between Ghana and Malta.
As part of the visit to the country, Mr. Edgar Preca used the privilege to meet the Minister for Youth and Sports, Isaac Asiamah, and his deputy, Pius Enam Hadzie, as well as the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi, and some other delegates of the GFA.
The visit is expected to reap some mutual benefits between the two countries in the area of ensuring exchange programmes for coaches, referees, youths and women football.
The two countries also discussed football administration and sports medicine.
The first ever First Gentleman in the history of Malta and the Community Chest Fund Chairman of Malta, Preca, said that the two countries will collaborate with each other, adding that both nations can promote sports to help improve their relationship.
In a meeting with the press, Presca highlighted that even though Malta is limited in football, it’s still witnessing some progress in the sport.
“I am honoured to be here. We have a lot to learn from you (Ghana). We have managed to produce world sportsmen as well. Even though we are passionate about football, we are what we are, we are limited but we are progressing as well,” he said.
Ghana’s FA President Nyantakyi stated that the visit can also ensure a mutual benefit between the two countries in terms of exchange programmes.
Malta’s first couple will watch a football match between Accra Academy Senior High School and the National Under-17 team at the Asamoah Gyan Sports Complex.
Ghana is the first country in recent times to invite a sitting Maltese President for a visit.
President Preca and her delegation will depart Accra to Europe on Friday, July 28.
