Retired army officer Kwadwo Boakye Gyan has lamented the seeming breakdown in law and order under the presidency of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
He said the numerous attacks on security establishments must be a cause for worry to all well-meaning Ghanaians.
On a scale of 1 – 10, the retired army major ranked the incumbent government the lowest – giving it 1.
Major Boakye Gyan expressed these sentiments on Saturday, when he sat in the hot seat on TV3’s Hot Issues.
A leading architect of the June 4, 1979 revolution, the card-bearing member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) said for an army captain to be killed by civilians is the highest order of indiscipline.
He laid the blame at the doorstep of the president, suggesting that if not curbed, the situation will degenerate into irreparable chaos.
“All I know is that the security that the constitution guarantees is under threat,” the Akora observed, “and if we are not careful, we will lose it.”
He wondered how army officers would be deployed to guard mines instead of performing the foremost duty of resisting external aggression against the state.
The retired military officer said the situation is because other para-military agencies, whose duty it is to fight inner aggression, are not performing their duties due to failed leadership.
Major (rtd) Boakye Gyan could not say anything about the fight against illegal mining, saying the fight is simply non-existent.
According to him, all that has been done so far is “talk, talk and talk”.
He recounted an episode he resisted a chief in his area from leasing a land to a firm for mining.
“I have told them something will happen if they venture to come there,” he said in Twi.
