ON Friday, June 9, 2017 Major Maxwell Adam Mahama was honoured with a state burial, with full military honours. An attestation that Major Mahama was indeed a gallant soldier.
BUT as the tributes were read one that caught our attention was that of the government which was read by the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who was acting as the President at the time.
IN fact the part which interests us most was the one which said that: “May the death of Major Maxwell Adam Mahama serve as the death that heralded the death of impunity in our nation. May the tears of his wife, children and family never ever again be shed by another soldier’s family.”
TODAY agrees with this and believes that Major Mahama’s death must end all forms of impunity, more especially mob injustice. And not only must mob justice not happen to a soldier but to every living Ghanaian in this country.
IT is quite worrying that the culture of impunity in this country is growing at an alarming rate, with many Ghanaians having no fear for the law.
WHAT happened to Major Mahama could happen to any of us in this country. As a matter of fact many examples abound which indicate that several innocent Ghanaians have suffered same fate like the grisly killing of Major Mahama.
THOUGH the gallant soldier died a very wicked death, Today believes we can honour him even in his grave if we all say no to mob/instant injustice.
WE must all make an affirmation and be committed to it that never again will such a thing happen in this country.
NO matter what crime(s) a person commits we must understand that it does not lie within our power to mete out instant justice to such a person.
IT must equally be borne in mind that even in the animal kingdom where some of us think it is chaotic there is law and order. How much more a country such as ours which is under the practice of rule of law?
THUS, it is incumbent on us not to resort to mob action when we apprehend persons we believe have committed one wrong or the other. There are appropriate quarters that we are obliged to send such persons.
ADDITIONALLY, let’s refrain from the habit of taking the law into our own hands, believing that we have the right and mandate to do justice to people we suspect to be criminals.
WE should always be mindful that in our zest to mete out instant justice we could be killing an innocent person.
ON this score Today wishes to appeal to every Ghanaian to make it a personal commitment to adopt a stand to campaign vigourously against mob justice and ensure that that culture of lawlessness is brought to an end in this our beloved country.
