Hundreds of youth in the Yilo and Manya Krobo districts of the Eastern Region have embarked on a demonstration to demand a memorandum of understanding between the Krobos and the Volta River Authority before the construction of the Akosombo and Akuse dams.
The spokesperson of the group, Joshua Borkor, explained that the call for the MOU was to ascertain a clause in it which states that areas within 27 miles radius of the dam are not to pay electricity bills.
The youth clad in red and black marched for three hours from Kpongunor in the Manya Krobo District to Akutunya Station in Somanya municipality before delivering their petition to the Yilo Krobo Municipal Chief Executive.
The group said the construction of the dam damaged large acreage of Krobo farmlands which can no longer be cultivated, resulting in unbearable hardship to the current generation of Krobos.
Notwithstanding this, they claimed they are also given excessive electricity bills to pay.
They therefore want the chiefs and chief executives of the three Krobo local assemblies to as a matter of urgency come out and explain to the people what led to them going against the said MOU.
They cautioned, failure to address the issue will mean the impending festivals of the people of Manya Krobo and Yilo Krobo will be disrupted.
Receiving the petition, the MCE of Yilo Krobo, Tetteh Kupualor, promised the aggrieved demonstrators that his office will go through the petition and respond immediately.
