Head coach of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Steve Polack has assured fans of winning several silverwares for the club following their victory over arch rivals Accra Hearts of Oak at the Baba Yara stadium on Monday, July 3rd 2017.
The Porcupine Warriors wrapped up their first victory this season over the Phobians and successfully defended this year’s UBA President Cup by beating them 4-1 on penalties.
The match, which was originally scheduled for Sunday 2nd July 2017, had to be deferred to Monday due to a heavy downpour that rendered the pitch unfit for the match to progress after 68 minutes with both sides scoring in each half.
Unlike the first match that was dominated by the Porcupine Warriors, Hearts hit the ground running by trolling the goal area of Kotoko but the resolute defence of Kotoko marshalled by captain Amos Frimpong restrained the Phobian’s attack led by Patrick Razak and Alexander Koasssi from causing havoc.
Patrick Razak, who replaced Cosmos Dauda came close to opening the score but missed the chance from close range much to the disappointment of vociferous Hearts defenders.
However, Kotoko were able to turn the tides against Hearts in the second half but failed to capitalize on the numerous chances to seal the much needed victory for newly appointed head coach, Steve Pollack, who was supervising the team for the first time against their sworn rivals.
Asante Kotoko stepped up to win the game in a penalty shootout after a 90 minutes stalemate. Kotoko scored all four of their kicks as against Accra Hearts who were unlucky to miss two out of their three kicks through Captain Reuben Gnange and defender, Vincent Atinga.
Speaking to reporters after match, coach Polack believes his journey with the club has just begun as he’s targeting a stranglehold of every trophy that will present itself before the club under his tenure.
“It’s a great feeling, I have to applaud the players because they gave everything for this victory, and also the supporters who even after yesterday’s heavy down pour came in their numbers today to cheer, which is fantastic,” the English gaffer said.
“This is the first trophy of the season and it’s evident that I’m a bit emotional. This is the start of many trophies I hope to win with this club because, I’m going to be here for a long time and hope that we can win more.” He added
