Mr Kofi Adjei, Berekum Municipal Chief Executive has commended the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) for helping to improve on the economic livelihood of the Ivorian refugees in the Municipality.
He said about 1,049 refugees who arrived at the Fetentaa refugee camp in 2011, had enjoyed their stay due to the good shelter, healthcare, education and food aid provided by the UN agency.
Mr Adjei commended UNHCR at a durbar to mark the 2017 celebration of the World Refugees Day at the Fetentaa Refugees Camp in the Municipality.
The UN’s World Refugee Day is observed on June 20 each year to honour the courage, strength and determination of women, men and children who are forced to flee their homeland under threat of persecution, conflict and violence.
MrAdjei also commended the chiefs and people of Berekum Traditional Area and the Brong-Ahafo region in general for their peaceful co-existence with the refugees, saying, it was the wish of the refugees to be where they were, but circumstances beyond their control had forced them to do so.
He entreated Ghanaians to respect and co-exist with the refugees whilst the refugees in return abide by the rules and regulations, adhere to laws of the land and respect the Ghanaian culture and tradition.
“We are all one people and there is no need for us to discriminate and reject our friends from the neighbouring country”, MrAdjei added.
Mr Emmanuel Ansu Twum, the Head of the Field Unit of the UNHCR in Sunyani, said more than 65 million refugees were living around the world.
He expressed UNHCR’s commitment to ensure that the socio-economic wellbeing of the Ivorian refugees was improved.
