The early completion of most developmental projects qualified the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to access the Universal Development Goal (UDG) supplementary fund in 2017.
Chief Executive of the Assembly Osei Assibey Antwi says the grant of $445,787 was invested in schools and other infrastructural development projects.
The supplementary UDG funds were invested in the furnishing of one community library and procurement of 2,300 dual desks, 1,200 sets of student tables and chairs and 130 sets of teacher tables and chairs, among others.
The criteria for the qualification to access the fund included the early completion of projects, quality of work done and utilization of the projects by the beneficiary areas in the city.
However, some of the projects suffered setbacks, causing delays in completion.
Speaking in an interview with 3news.com, Mr. Assibey Antwi said the Chirapatre lorry station project could not be completed on schedule.
“This project entails site preparation and ground stabilization to pave way for the construction of the Chirapatre Terminal which is a key component under the Kumasi Roads and Drainage Extension project,” he explained.
The Sofoline lorry station project also suffered delays due to litigation and initial non-cooperation from drivers.
“It has now been completed and is in use now,” said Kumasi’s mayor.
