The President of the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSSAG) has denied reports that the association intends to embark on an industrial action against the Akufo-Addo government over unresolved issues.
Mr Alex Nartey explained that the association wrote to the previous government last year demanding certain conditions of service and other things to make its work effective. However, the government did to take any action, following which JUSSAG issued an ultimatum to the new administration to act on its concerns, with the caution that it would “advise” itself if its calls were not heeded.
This, he said, could not be interpreted as a threat of strike by the association against the government.
There were reports that JUSSAG would be agitating against the government over unresolved issues.
Speaking in an interview with Paa Kwesi Parker-Wilson, on Ghana Yensom on Accra100.5FM on Monday May 1 as Ghanaians join the world to celebrate Workers’ Day, Mr Nartey said: “We expected to receive certain items from the government last year but that did not happen, yet those in authority failed to explain to us why we did not receive those items.
“And so we issued an ultimatum to the government to address our needs otherwise we were going to advise ourselves. It did not mean we were going to embark on a strike action. We were only voicing our anger.”
Ghana joins the rest of the world to celebrate International Workers’ Day today, Monday 1 May.
The day is marked across the world to celebrate labour and the working class.
In Ghana, the day is celebrated with a parade by trade unions and labour associations. The parades are normally addressed by the Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress and by regional secretaries in the regions. Workers from different organisations, through banners and T-shirts, identify their companies.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is expected to be the special guest of honour at this year’s National May Day Parade to be held at the Independence Square.
This year’s May Day celebration is on the theme: “Ghana @60: Mobilising for Ghana’s future through the creation of decent jobs”.
