The Ashanti Regional police command has commenced investigations into an alleged robbery attack on the Cape Coast-Kumasi highway on Monday night that led to the shooting of a policeman.
Police Corporal Kwaku Mensah was hit in the jaw and chest as the four suspected robbers shot through the Sprinter bus in which they were travelling from Cape Coast to Kumasi.
He is responding to treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Ashanti Regional Police PRO, ASP Juliana Obeng told Kumasi-based Akoma FM.
The shooting forced the driver to stop for the robbers to take away the valuables and unspecified amount of money belonging to the passengers, she explained. The incident happened between Akwanserem and Kyereboaso in the Adanse North District.
“At the time of the incident, the four guys had forced the driver to stop. They did that by shooting into the car and it was one of the bullets that hit the policeman,” ASP Obeng said
Cpl. Mensah was said to be returning from official duty when the bus was attacked.
“We had report that a sprinter bus with registration number GN 4297-13 from Cape Coast to Kumasi with about 22 passengers on board was attacked by some suspected armed robbers”.
All other passengers on the bus with the registration GN 4297-13 escaped unhurt.
“We are investigating to get the four robbers,” she said.
