A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Buem Constituency of the Volta Region, Mr. Chris Addy-Nayo, has called on the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to focus its attention on investing in the health and education of the youth.
In his view, investing in the education and health needs of the youth in the region was critical, instead of creating what he described as “weak political institutions which duplicate existing ones.”
Speaking at a meeting at Hohoe with NDC Hohoe constituency members, Mr. Addy-Nayo explained that the carving new regions out of the existing ones without the resources to deal with the challenges of development only goes to weaken existing structures and worsen existing developmental challenges.
The meeting was in response to the Kwesi Botchwey report, following the defeat of the NDC in the 2016 election where one of the main recommendations is for the party to restore the capacity and effectiveness of its various organs, especially at the branch level, which connects directly to the people.
In an effort to rebuild a stronger NDC to be able to meet up with the challenges of managing a 21st century nation, he said the NDC was embarking on a soul-searching effort to rebuild itself towards winning the trust of the electorate.
The campaign, he stressed, will also help the NDC to rebuild the country based on its social democratic credentials, reconnecting itself properly to its social democratic roots and the principal actors in these roots including the youth and women.
Mr. Addy-Nayo stated that the focus of the government should be in investing the limited resources allocated in the health and education of the youth in the region.
That, according to him, will go along to equip them with the necessary skills for the job market without which the creation of extra regions in addition to existing ones would only bring undue pressure to bear on the limited resources available to the country.
“It is time to consolidate the number of regions in the country,” he urged, stressing that “and to rather focus on investing in our human capital and the youth.
The government aims to embark on a regional consultation towards a referendum for the creation of a new region out of the Volta Region.
Mr. Addy-Nayo further called on the people of Hohoe to protect their environment, forests and rivers given the potential of economic value people in the region can benefit from a clean environment leading to job creation for the unemployed.
He stated this in the light of the ongoing degradation of the natural environment through illegal mining activities, destruction of natural habits etc.
