Sin Causes Cancer – Are you a sinner? then you are at risk of having cancer… so says Indian Health Minister from Assam state.
Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that cancer “is divine justice” caused by “past sins of a person”. According to the unique minister, people could also get diseases like cancer “because of the sins of their parents”.

Himanta who made the statement at a public event was referring to a section of teachers in state government schools notorious for bunking classes.
God makes us suffer when we sin. Sometimes we come across young men getting inflicted with cancer or young men meeting with accidents. If you observe the background you will come to know that it’s divine justice.
It would have been concluded that all Indians are under a spell if these comments caused no controversy.

As expected, massive tongue-lashes from Indians followed the minister after his rather obnoxious comments went viral. The minister’s comments drew anger from cancer sufferers, their families, as they were really saddened by the statement.
Many took to social media especially Twitter, to criticise the remarks, with calls for proper sanctioning of the politician.
Opposition parties have described his comments as “unfortunate”, and have demanded a public apology. State opposition party -the All India United Democratic Front said Mr. Sarma had made the statement to “cover his failure to control the spread of cancer in the state”.
Reacting to the comments, Congress leader Debabratta Saikia who also regarded his statement as unfortunate also demanded that he rendered an unqualified apology for it.
One would think the minister will follow the untold criticisms with an apology, but he rather gave an explanation and a clarification of what he said.
The minister who holds office in the Assam state government said he was only advising teachers to work efficiently and serve others or otherwise face “karmic deficiency” and suffer for it in the next life.
Mr. Sarma said it was a speech to motivate the teachers to do better.
