Private legal practitioner Abraham Amaliba has endorsed the appointment of Justice Sophia Akuffo as the new Chief Justice, indicating that her performance in office will prove critics wrong.
According to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) communicator, Justice Akuffo has “impeccable credentials” for which reason she can execute her duties efficiently.
However, he noted that the only snag is the perception by critics that her decisions could be influenced having been trained as a lawyer under President Nana Akuffo-Addo.
This, he said, may not entirely hold because the Chief Justice has security of tenure and there should not be any impediment in taking action against the President should the need arise.
Mr Amaliba, who was a guest on Citi FM’s The Big Issue on Saturday May 13, told host Umaru Sandah Amadu that the incoming Chief Justice would need to work to erase that perception through her handling of political cases. For him, people will scrutinise the way she sets up panels to adjudicate political court cases, so the Chief Justice must do her best to be fair and just at all times.
Other individuals including former Attorney General and Justice Minister Betty Mould Iddrisu and former Gender, Children and Social Protection Minister Nana Oye Lithur, who are members of the NDC, have hailed the new appointment.
