Hundreds of displaced residents in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region are appealing for support from the government following a rainstorm on Monday night.
The rainstorm ripped off the roof of six basic schools, one CHPS centre and several house including apartments of the Bongo police and Fire Service personnel.
The Bongo District Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Mr. Tahiru Rafiu disclosed this after a rapid assessment of the affected areas on Tuesday (30th May,2017).
He said, even though his outfit was yet to compile a comprehensive report of all affected households by the rainstorm, the dire effect of the storm on the displaced victims cannot be underestimated and called for urgent aid for the residents.
The affected schools are; the Soe Community Senior High School, the Agomo, Soe, Ayopia and Vincent Akurigu primary schools.
Agongo Selina a victim said “the rainstorm yesterday collapsed our rooms and we had to stand throughout the night, my clothes are all wet even some meeting money given to me cannot be found, am pleading with government to come to our aid.”
Another victim Maapeh Felix said “My Television, fridge and other gadgets are destroyed and its affecting, currently am packing out of the room but to where? so am appealing to government to help us.”
But the Bongo District Chief Executive Peter Awinbisa disclosed that, the assembly will immediately work to get the affected schools repaired to enable teaching and learning to continue.
He however appealed to government, non-governmental organizations and philanthropists to intervene by supporting the residents with wood and roofing sheets to rehabilitate their places of abode.
Mr. Awinpisa bemoaned the shoddy works the contractor who executed the Agomo primary school adding that, the said contractor will be reprimanded to serve as deterrent to others.
He also added that, tree planting will be a priority across the district particularly at public institutions and households to reduce the dire effect of rainstorm in the area.
