Member of Parliament (MP) for Afram Plains South Constituency in the Eastern Region, Mr Eric Osei-Owusu, has deployed 100 undergraduate students from the country’s public universities to teach in some deprived schools in his District.
According to him, the students will be distributed across public schools in the constituency where there are no or enough teachers to teach for five weeks. He emphasised that the teaching was voluntary.
He described as sad to see one teacher, teaching six different classes at the same time in this age and time.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Today, Mr Osei-Owusu hinted that mobilizing 100 undergraduate students from the country’s public universities to teach in these schools were part of his plans to develop the Human Resource (HR) base of the district.
He explained that quality education is the bedrock of every society, hence devoting his time and resources to ensure his constituents get the best of education like their counterparts elsewhere as well as to be able to compete at any level.
When asked why such an initiative, the MP answered in the affirmative, saying ensuring quality education for people of Afram Plains South was a collective task. “During my campaign, I came across a lot of schools which had only one teacher serving classes one to six (1-6) which I thought was not a good idea, thus this initiative to fill in the gap,” he maintained.
“These students are not just here to teach but also to motivate the pupils to aspire to get to their level of education. Because education is the only tool and intervention that will alleviate people of poverty” Mr Osei-Owusu added.
The MP explained that he has been working ‘hand-in-hand’ with the District Education Director, Mr Moses Ameteh to fashioned out the modalities for teaching and placement of the students to the various schools and so far everything is working as schedule.
The District Education Director, who received the students at his secretariat, was full of praise for the MP for coming up with such initiative to help the pupils in the district who are lagging in teaching and learning.
“Inadequate teaching staff is our major problem; because most of the areas are remote, people sometime refuse to accept postings to these places which is affecting teaching and learning. We are most grateful for the kind gesture from the MP.” He opined.
