Free SHS logo -The Free SHS policy is gradually moving from the drawing board to a reality! President Akufo Addo unveiled the logo for the government’s educational flagship program at the Flagstaff House on August 31.
This policy promised by the government during the 2016 electioneering entails free public senior high school education for all eligible Ghanaians from the 2017/2018 academic year -September 2017.
The program will ensure that there will be no admission fees, no library fees, no science center fees, no computer laboratory fees, no examination fees, no utility fees and all the other charges.
There will also be free textbooks, free boarding and free meals and day students will get a meal at school for free. The president also said the policy will cover agricultural, vocational and technical institutions at the high school level.
The logo features two students celebrating because they are beneficiaries of the policy.
Underneath the symbol are three words; access, equity and quality and the logo features an open book, which the Minister of State in-Charge of Tertiary Education, Professor Kwesi Yankah, explained: “represents learning that generates hope and optimism for a prosperous Ghana.

Access: This theme expresses government’s aim of widening access to high school education.
Equity: This theme emphasizes a fundamental driver in any social intervention program. It explains that poverty, gender, deprivation, etc. will no longer be barriers to education. The Government is eager to ensure a fair and just society where there are equal opportunities for all, irrespective of family circumstances.

Quality: This expresses government’s resolve to provide her citizens with the best quality with regards to education. It explains that the expected expansion of access to education can be achieved, without the need to compromise the quality of education.

Nana Addo unveiled the Free SHS logo in the presence of the Vice President of the Republic, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia; the Minister for Education, Hon. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, MP; Minister of State for Education, Prof. Kwesi Yankah; and officials from the Ministry of Education.
President Akufo-Addo noted that the coming into effect of this policy is vital for the transformation of the Ghanaian economy.
However, the government is yet to release a policy document on the Free SHS policy, which critics have noted is more important than the developments pertaining to public relations.
