President Nana Akufo Addo has disclosed government’s intention to sponsor the funeral of late highlife musician, Paapa Yankson. According to the President, Paapa Yankson’s funeral will be a state burial and should be held at the forecourt of the State House.
President Nana Addo made this benevolent disclosure during a courtesy call on him by a delegation from family and friends of the music legend, led by the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Catherine Abelema Afeku.
Paapa Yankson’s widow, Mary Ogbamey; his son Silas Yankson, and some of his siblings and relatives were also part of the delegation.
Extending his condolences to the bereaved family, Nana Addo described Paapa Yankson as a pillar and icon in the Ghana Music Industry who have rendered selfless service to the country.

Also among the delegates were the head of Odomna Ebusua, Nana Akom Ogyeanda I, the Queen mother of the Odumna clan of Ekumfi Asaman/Buadukwaa, Nana Enfiua III, and the leadership of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA).
The MUSIGA delegation included veteran highlife musician Nana Kwame Ampadu, MUSIGA President Bice Osei Kufuor, former MUSIGA President Alhaji Sidiku Buari, first vice-president of MUSIGA Bessa Simons, National Organiser of MUSIGA, Chizzy Wailer, Director of Communications and Special Projects, and the Tagoe Sisters, Ben Brako and Ahuma Bosco Ocansey.
Paapa Yankson’s funeral rites will be held on the 21st and 22nd of October, 2017. The dates were officially made known to the President by the Odomna Ebusua head, Nana Akom Ogyeanda I.
The Highlife Legend died on 21st, 2017, at the age of 73. He reportedly died in his sleep at his residence in Dansoman, Accra. Paapa Yankson for some years before his death was confined to the wheelchair due to ill health.
But the strong-spirited music icon never allowed the condition to completely put him off the stage as he once in a while performed at events; one of such occasions being at the 2017 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA), where he was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
