The demonstration by the irate youth took place barely 5 hours after the release of the 212 MMDCEs
A number of youth in the Savelugu-Nanton Municipality in the Northern Region last Wednesday afternoon embarked on a demonstration to protest the appointment of Hajia Ayishetu Seidu as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the area.
The demonstration by the irate youth took place barely five hours after the announcement of the 212 Municipal and District Chief Executives (MDCEs) nationwide by the President.
The youth, who marched through some streets in Savelugu, the municipal capital, destroyed some billboards of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) amidst the chanting of war songs.
The protest
The irate youth claimed Hajia Seidu, the President’s appointee for the position of the MCE, was neither a native of the area nor a known party member in the municipality, had never voted in the constituency and has also not contributed in cash or in kind to the victory of the party in the constituency.
The youth threatened to protest against the appointee until she was withdrawn.
“We will not sit down for someone who is not known in the municipality to be imposed on us,” some of the irate youth said.
Party
The Communications Officer of the party in the Savelugu Constituency, Mr Abubakar Sadik Suleimana, told the Daily Graphic in an interview that they would appeal to the conscience of the youth to ensure that peace prevailed, adding that the party was against the method being used by the youth to address their concerns.
“We disagree with their method but on the other hand, they have legitimate concerns and we are going to meet with the leadership of the youth to ensure that peace prevails,” he stated.
