A youth group in Zabzugu, believed to be loyalists of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Zabzugu District in the Northern Region, yesterday attacked the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) office in the district.
The group was said to have stormed the office of the NHIS at about 8:45 a.m and asked the staff in the facility to vacate the place.
Action
According to reports, the youth group also deflated the tyres of a vehicle belonging to the scheme.
Sources say the leadership of the group believed that those working at the facility were members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and therefore they needed to vacate their posts for NPP members to take over.
Police
However, when contacted, the Northern Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr Patrick Adusei Sarpong, denied that there was an attack on the NHIS office at Zabzugu.
According to him, there had not been an attack on any NHIS office in the district.
“There was no attack on NHIS,” ACP Sarpong insisted.
Attempts to reach both the Zabzugu District Coordinating Director and the head of the Zabzugu NHIS office proved futile.
An official of the scheme in the area who declined to mention his name, however, confirmed the story. According to him, the group earlier attacked the district assembly offices, and on their way out, went into the offices of the scheme which shares an office with the assembly, after which they deflated the tyres of the scheme’s vehicle parked outside.
Recall
It will be recalled that many offices of the NHIS and Youth Employment Agency (YEA) across the country have, been attacked this year by groups believed to be affiliated to the NPP.
