Government has invested GHS 25 million into the Ghana Water Company Limited to improve water treatment at the Daboase Water Headworksw to increase piped water to the people of Sekondi-Takoradi and its environs.
The Headworks, which has a daily installed capacity of six million gallons of treated water, has for a long time been supplying about 4 million gallons of treated water daily.
The situation has largely been attributed to obsolete equipment such as pumping machines which were installed some 50 years ago and intermittently breaks down.
This usually leads to shortage of water to some areas, thus affecting economic activities and social life of residents in the affected areas.
GWCL Western Regional Manager, Mark Teiku Cudjoe, told a news conference at Daboase Tuesday that has become necessary to replace the obsolete machines including the low and high lift pumps.
He said the release of GHC25 million to the GWCL was timely and would be used complete a three-phase revamping works at Daboase and Inchaban Headworks as well as the Bosmoase intake point.
“As at now, the first phase we have done is we have changed the two high lift pumps with the control panel and we are bringing additional pipe to add to the intake, and we are doing the alum injection into the pipeline,” he said.
He said they would speed up the processing of the water, adding “We elevated the high lift pump by five per cent. In effect, the plant capacity of six million will increase and that the people of Takoradi will see a significant water production.
“At Inchaban we are changing the high lifting pump pumping to Takoradi. We are changing the Sekondi pump, also pumping to Sekondi and then the blowers and the upwards pumps,” he said.
These, he said, would improve water production at Daboase Headworks from the current four million gallons per day to between 5.5 million and six million gallons daily.
Deputy Western Regional Minister, Gifty Eugenia Kusi who inspected ongoing works at Daboase indicated it was necessary to improve on treated water supply in the metropolis and its adjoining communities considering that commercial activities are on the increase in the area.
Meanwhile manager of Intermec Company Limited, Eric Johnson says a period of two months is expected to complete full installation and rehabilitation of the said headworks
