A Swedish court on Friday sentenced Ghana international Kwame Bonsu to two years in prison for raping and assaulting his wife Marie Magnusson. In addition to the jail sentence, the 22-year-old will face deportation and would be slapped with another 10-year ban from returning to Sweden -where he has lived since 2013 unless he is pardoned.
Several sources have made attempts to get the full details of the unfortunate incident as well as the case where the Ghanaian player was indicted. But despite the seeming vague reports pertaining to the bizarre incident, there are some facts about the controversial case.

The court hearing took place in Gavle, Sweden. According to the ex-wife of the footballer, the sexual assault and beatings occurred in the couple’s condo amid a night in November 2015 when he had refused to let her out.
Kwame Bonsu had repeatedly denied the charges, but testimony from his wife’s relatives led the court to believe the victim’s version of declarations.
After the Gavle District Court found Kwame Bonsu guilty of the charges brought against him by his ex-wife, it issued him a two-year jail sentence. The court also ordered the footballer and his lawyers to pay a sum of $14,000 to his ex-wife to be used to settle her legal fees and some of it would go to her as compensation for damages.

Court gave the footballer and his lawyers the chance to appeal the verdict. Kwame ‘Conte’ Bonsu started playing football in Ghana with Kumasi-based Anokye Stars before joining Hearts of Lions and later moved ply his trade in Sweden four years ago.
The midfielder who currently plays for Swedish second-division side, Gefle IF, has had his contract terminated by the club.
Announcing the future of the Ghanaian footballer on its official website, the Swedish side said Bonsu was dismissed from the team with immediate effect, as his services was no longer needed.
The stormy marriage between the two barely lasted a year. According to reports, Bonsu initially met her in 2014 when he was playing in the southern Swedish city of Mjolby. They got married the following year.
Mixed reactions immediately followed the verdict issued the Ghana international. While many have given a thumbs up to Swedish authorities; others most of whom are Ghanaians, have raised eyebrows regarding the circumstances surrounding the short-spanned marriage.
Some of these include the likes of former Ghana international, Yussif Chibsah who has attempted to give an insight into the troubled marriage. Yussif in a post indicated that the Ghana international was rather being intimidated by an advantaged citizen.
Marie he said, married Bonsu for his money and nothing else. Proving his point, the former player attached a video which the Swedish wife of convicted Ghanaian footballer, Kwame Bonsu can be heard saying she only married him for his money. However, the clip did not show the faces of the couple, giving room for doubts.
Kwame Bonsu joined Gefle IF from Mjallby AIF two years ago after leaving the shores of Ghana to play his football abroad. He signed a 2.5 two and half years contract with Gefle IF in July 2015.
