Ghana’s Armwrestling team, the Golden Arms finished 2nd at the Africa Amrwrestling Championship held in Lagos Nigeria.
The championship which was Ghana’s first together with the congress and other modalities begun on June 28 through to July 2, 2017.
The two day event held at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere, saw Ghana winning a total of 21 medals with 10 Gold, 5 Silver, and 6 bronze. They increased their medal tally to 21 on day 2 with 4 Gold, 3 Silver 4 and Bronze from the Right Arm Battles.
Isaac Nii Amugi won 2 Gold, and 2 Bronze in the 70Kg category while Alberta Ampomah of the GPS won 2 Gold in the 80kg category. Nii Darku Doodo in 75kg won 1 Gold and 1 Bronze each.
Other winners from the 12 athletes Ghana presented are Nii Otoo Larkyne of immigration with 110kg, winning 1 Silver; 2 Gold for Disabled Haruna Tahiru, Adjetey Sowah (65kg) grabbing 1 Gold, 1 Silver, Cabu Ocansey (70kg) claiming 2 Silver, Ebenezer Nii Armah (+110kg) taking away 1 Bronze and Edward Asamoah (90kg) picking a Silver, and a Bronze each.
Ghana won 2 Gold, 1 Silver and, 1 Bronze in the Masters Category, which was a challenge for age 40 years and above.
Host nation Nigeria top the medal zone and won the championship with a total of 46 medals which comprise of 19 Gold, 16 Silver and 11 Bronze. Out of the 18 countries that participated in the championship, fellow West African side Mali came third with 13 medals.
Apart from this achievement, Ghana’s President Charles Osei Asibey was elected unto the Africa Armwrestling Federation Board as Deputy General Secretary at the 8th Congress for the next three years. He was also made the Competition and Events Director.
