Government has partnered a local company to establish a factory in the Western Region to produce charcoal from palm kernel for export.
The factory, to be sited within the Prestea Huni Valley municipality, is expected to generate revenue for the assembly and create jobs for the people in the area.
Municipal Chief Executive for the area, Mozart K. Owuh, who announced this Thursday said government has already disbursed GHC22,700,000 to the local partner for the project which he said would operate under the government’s One-District, One-Factory programme.
“Ghc22, 700,000 have been given to the promoter to come and convert palm oil to charcoal bar,” Mr. Owuh told Takoradi-based Connect 97.1FM during the inauguration of Huni Valley District as a municipal assembly.
The factory, the MCE explained, would use palm kernel byproduct to produce the charcoal bar.
Although the municipality play host to three mining companies, the people are predominantly into cocoa, rubber and palm plantation.
Mr. Owuh was optimistic of the municipality being industrialized as the palm plantation produce becomes more useful, indicating the likelihood of the Aboso Glass factory being revamped soon.
The MCE observed these and other projects would increase infrastructure in the area, which he said would propel the municipality to attain a metropolitan status in the next decade.
Meanwhile, the traditional leaders of Fiaseman Traditional Council appealed to government to liaise with the mining companies in the area to site a gold museum in the area
Minister of Tourism and Creative Art and also Member of Parliament for Evalue Ajomoro Dwira constituency, Catherine Afeku, in response to the proposal said a comprehensive regional tourism plan is being considered and that the proposal will be factored into it.
She added her ministry is working towards making the Western Region a growth pole on the line of tourism, drawing people from near and far to the western enclave like other regions.
