Construction works on a vaccine manufacturing factory is set to begin in Ghana. The factory when completed will be the first of its kind in Sub Saharan Africa serving the needs of Ghana and the entire region..
This comes on the back of the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Merck KGaA and Ridge Management Solutions witnessed by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Germany’s Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, Brigitte Zypries.
“With all the issues with disease outbreaks we are confronted with, it is important that we have a vaccine factory. This will be something to build on as far as the pharmaceutical industry is concerned here in Ghana,” Vice President Dr. Bawumia noted.
The Vice President said the agreement between Ghana and Germany forms part of government’s effort to strengthen economic relations between the two countries.
“Our relationship dates back to the 17th century, and we have built on that relationship over the years. Our co-operation in the economic sphere is where we want to focus the future of our relationship.”
This he said formed the basis of a 3-day visit by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and a business delegation to the country.
A memorandum of understanding was also signed between Siemens AG and Rotan Energy Pte for the construction of a 330 megawatt gas-fired power plant in Ghana.
The plant is projected to be the cheapest on the market, and is expected to significantly reduce the cost of electricity when integrated into the national grid.
According Dr. Bawumia, the plant will ensure sustainable energy supply in the country with a major impact on the economy.
“Ghanaians can testify to what happens when we have issues with energy supply, and so it is very important that this MOU has been signed and we are moving forward to begin construction. The quality and efficiency this brings onboard will enhance the power supply.”
The Vice President also said government is looking forward to having more investments from Germany to further boost Ghana’s economy.
