The Ghana Climate Innovation Center (GCIC) has set out to give a total of 1.1 billion dollars to 50 entrepreneurs who will be able to come up with innovative solutions in the areas of solar energy, energy efficiency, water purification, waste management and climate smart agriculture.
The entrepreneurs whose innovations will breed positive impact on the environment as well as create employment, will also receive both training and funding from the association.
In an interview with Citi Business News, the Executive Director of the Ghana Climate Innovation Centre, Ruka Sanusi said talks are underway with government on how to address the challenges of businesses in the area of climate.
According to her, the stakeholders will also deliberate on how best to implement the innovations of the entrepreneurs in solving some of the country’s socio-economic problems.
“Looking at all the five sectors of our concentration, we ask whether there are any government policies in place and what is the regulatory environment like? Also, whether the policies are helping our entrepreneurs or impeding them?,” Ruka quizzed.
She added,“There will policy papers, workshops and seminars that actually demonstrate the challenges that workers in these sectors are facing and how even with these challenges these entrepreneurs are coping as businesses.”
Meanwhile she says they “are confident of working together with the government to ensure that the green environment is a reality as well as the success of these entrepreneurs.”
GCIC’s operations are carried out with funding support from the World Bank and some partners.
It has the objective to establish local institutional capacity to support Ghanaian entrepreneurs and new ventures involved in developing profitable and locally appropriate solutions to climate change mitigation and adaptation.
To execute its mandate, GCIC incubates green businesses and offers them services including entrepreneurship and business acceleration, funding facilitation, market growth among others.
