An investigation carried out by a non-governmental organization Volunteers Against Environmental Degradation revealed that galamsey activities still ongoing in the Upper Denkyira West District and areas around the Denkyira Obuasi township where Major Maxwell Mahama was murdered.
The illegal mining is still prevalent in the Ofin, Akwaboso and Subin rivers in the district despite a ban on these activities.
The NGO alleged that Chinese illegal miners are still engaging in galamsey activities. Large portions of land in the Akwaboso village has been turned into a mining site, posing serious threats to the community.
The Aminase and Juabo forest has also been turned into a mining site for many illegal miners in the area.
The organization is therefore calling on the minister for lands and natural resources, John Peter Amewu to visit the area and put a stop to galamsey activities in the area.
