A diesel tanker went up in flames Wednesday morning when it hit the back of a loaded Metro Mass Transit bus on the Assin Fosu-Kumasi highway in the Central Region, leaving one person injured.
The fuel tanker in an attempt to avoid driving into the Metro Mass bus, which was swerving a pothole on the road between Assin Dansame and Assin Brasiako, hit the back of the bus and caught fire few minutes after, an eyewitness told 3News.
Passengers on the bus that was travelling from Swedru to Kumasi as well as the driver of the tanker escaped unhurt.
The driver’s assistant of the tanker however suffered serious injuries and currently receiving treatment at a hospital at Assin Fosu.
Both the Metro Mass bus and the tanker were heading towards Praso. Witnesses say when the tanker hit the tail of the bus, the bus driver continued moving to some distance before stopping but the tanker turned on its side and caught fire.
The spot of the accident is said to be one of the accident prone areas on that stretch of the highway.
Though personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service responded swiftly to the accident scene, it was too late to extinguish the fire, witnesses told 3News.
The personnel of the Fire Service together with the Police had to block the road for close to an hour to clear the debris of the accident which happened at about 9:30am Wednesday.
Some assembly members of the Assin North District, expressed concern about the poor nature of the Assin Fosu Edubiase road, saying it’s in a very deplorable state.
They want the Ghana Highway authority to give it an immediate attention as that stretch has been an accident prone area, recording serious road accident almost every month.
