Acting National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay, has disclosed his intentions to contest for the party’s National Chairman position.
Members of the NPP will go to Congress in 2017 to elect National Officers, and Freddie Blay wants to be the substantive Chairman of the party.
Freddie Blay, who has been serving in an acting capacity since the removal of Paul Afoko in 2016, however said his immediate concern is to work towards the success of the Akufo-Addo administration.
While interacting with journalists, Freddie Blay further called on other members of the party to support the government to succeed.
“I will say never say never. What I will tell you is that, that is not my main focus at the moment. We have a little more than just six months that we have been in power. The presidency of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo must succeed. The party should be behind him fully. We were organized to win the election, but we must organize and be behind the government so that we will achieve or perform or fulfill the expectations of the people of this country.”
“I think that should be the focus for now. It’s too early for us to rush because we barely came from an election. So me, I wouldn’t tell you right now that I’m going for the election. But it’s only a bad soldier who doesn’t want to be the General of the Army. So God willing if things go on well, I will seriously consider it, but at the moment my focus is to help the government achieve its objectives,” he added.
Freddie Blay is currently the Chairman of the Board of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).
He is a lawyer and a politician. He was a Member of Parliament for Ellembele for years on the ticket of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), and served as the First Deputy Speaker in the Fourth Parliament of Ghana.
He lost his seat in the general elections held on 7 December 2008, to Armah Kofi Buah of the NDC.
He then resigned to join the New Patriotic Party after being criticized by some CPP stalwarts for not campaigning for the then CPP flagbearer, Paa Kwesi Nduom, but instead endorsing the NPP’s presidential candidate then, Nana Akufo-Addo.
