The First Lady, Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo has paid a working visit to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital to inspect an ongoing project being funded by the Rebecca Foundation.
The Mother and Baby unit of the hospital which is 70% complete is expected to curtail the rate of maternal deaths in the Ashanti region.
Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo expressed excitement about the progress of work at the Mother and Baby Unit.
“I must say, I’m overwhelmed. I didn’t expect to see anything like this and I thank God that the project has come this far with the support of Ghanaians”.
The First Lady remarked, “I can’t wait to come and launch it very soon”.
She noted that the foundation got involved in the project due to the fact that several hospitals are in need of help in the country and government alone cannot afford to do all.
The 2.5 million dollar project is being constructed by Africa Building Partners (abp) and is expected to be completed by November this year.
She thanked Ghanaians for their contributions towards the project and appealed for more support to complete it.
The First Lady was accompanied by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, the deputy minister, Elizabeth Agyemang, Mayor of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Osei Assibey Antwi and some women organizers of the NPP.
The Ashanti Region Minster, Simon Osei Mensah on behalf of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and the regional coordinating council presented GHc120,000 in support of the project.
The minister commended Mrs. Akufo-Addo for embarking on such an initiative to support the region in the fight against maternal deaths.
