Fearsome Elmina Sharks yesterday exhibited a stupendous performance to defeat Liberty Professionals 1-0 at the Carl Reindolf Park in Dansoman, Accra, to lift themselves out of the relegation zone in week 22 of the Ghana Premier League.
Striker Farouk Mohammed, took advantage of an unpardonable defensive lapse in the 14 minute from the Liberty Professionals defence to shoot the ball past goalkeeper Emmanuel Anim to hand Sharks their second win in a row.
Stopgap coach Yaw Acheampong’s side could have doubled the lead but were largely wasteful in front of goal even though Liberty Professionals dominated proceedings in the first half. The scientific soccer lads mounted pressure on Sharks in search of an equalizer, but the defence of Sharks remained resolute to deny them.
The Liberty Professional lads continued from where they left off in the first half, as they increased the pressure on the Sharks but failed to get the reward of a leveller through efforts by veteran striker, Ernest Papa Arko, who could not penetrate to beat goalkeeper Francis Arthur.
The win has moved Elmina Sharks to the 12th position on the league table, one point above Liberty Professionals who have accumulated a disappointing 26 points from 22 games.
Kumasi Asante Kotoko suffered a shock 1-0 defeat at the El-Wak stadium in Accra against Inter Allies. The Porcupine Warriors have lost for the first time under English manager Steven Polack after eight games without a loss in all competitions ahead of the much anticipated Super Clash with arch rivals Hearts of Oak in Kumasi this Sunday.
The only goal of the game came late in the first half as wonder kid Abdul Halik Hudu pounced on a loose ball after 31 minutes to slot home from close range to secure maximum points for the Inter Allies who are gunning for a top four place.
WAFA’s dream of winning this year’s Ghana Premier League title takes a giant step after inflicting a 2-0 defeat on Bechem United at the Red Bull Arena in Sogakope. The academy Boys exhibited exactly what they have done all season by adding Bechem United to their victims at the Sogakope Park.
The Academy Boys dominated play as usual in the opening minutes and nearly got the opener in the 3rdminute but a good goalkeeping by Lawrence Osei saved Bechem United blushes.
But it was not long when striker Komlan Agbegniadan broke the deadlock with a curling shot just outside the box in the 24th minute, and could have quickly added the second of the match on the 26th minute but failed to connect Daniel Lomotey’s shot across to the dismay of the home fans.
Midfielder Richmond Danso sealed the win for WAFA in the 46th minute as they take huge step in realizing their league title dream.
WAFA extend their lead at the summit of the log to three 43 points, three ahead of Aduana Stars following their 3-1 defeat at Wa All Stars.
Accra Hearts of Oak also ended their winless run in the league by beating Berekum Chelsea 2-0 at the Accra Sports Stadium. Two goals in each half from inspirational captain Thomas Abbey sealed victory for the Phobians ahead of their meeting with the Porcupine Warriors.
C. K Akunnor’s Ashantigold continued their resurgence in the league by beating relegation bound Bolga All Stars 2-0 at home while Ebusua Dwarfs failed to seal the maximum points at the Robert Mensah stadium against Accra Great Olympics.
Medeama SC defeated Tema Youth 1-0 at the T&A Park in Tarkwa through an Agyenim Boateng’s first half strike.
