When the FDA announced the implementation of the skin bleaching products’ ban, not just the Stop Bleaching campaign or health workers took note, beauty pageants across the country were also listening.
Miss Ghana one of the highest beauty pageants has joined in the fight to stop skin bleaching in the country.
According to reports, the Miss Ghana audition team turned away a lady with bleached skin during their auditions at the Best Western Atlantic Hotel in Takoradi. on August 28, 2017.
It had been a seamless one at Miss Ghana Audition in Takoradi until a ‘light skinned’ lady appeared before the panel. The smooth process was brought to a halt when the judges began inquiring about her lightened skin.
Questions after questions then brought to light that the said lady actually tampered with the complexion of her natural skin. The lady admitted to bleaching her face after a cosmetologist introduced her to a cream to help her deal with ‘rashes’ on her face.

She later did the ‘lightening’ (a term she used for the bleaching) to her entire body for uniformity. This was according to reports by Joy New’s Doreen Avio who was part of the team.
The Miss Ghana hopeful told the judges that she has stopped using the said cream for a long while now but her dark complexion has not returned. But despite her pleas and explanations, she was turned down.
The FDA has been on a long sensitization program aimed at educating market women and other groups on the negative effects of bleaching.
The body decided to augment their campaigns with some actions when they implemented the ban on the use of skin bleaching products in the country.
The ban which was implemented in January 2017 stopped bleaching creams from entering the country.
According to the FDA, since the said date, no product is registered with hydroquinone in it. Hydroquinone is an active agent found in skin bleaching and toning products.
Talks on the FDA ban of skin bleaching products started way back in 2016 following the prevailing rate of skin related issues, stemming from the use of hydroquinone products.
Earlier in 2016, the FDA issued a deadline to the sellers to clear any products with hydroquinone in them.
