IN our editorial comment on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 we commended the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) for their proactiveness, which led to the arrest of two women suspected to be involved in artificial colouring of oranges to sell to unsuspecting consumers.
IT was an issue that indeed sent shivers down the spines of consumers of oranges, especially when one could hardly tell the difference between coloured oranges and the ones that are not coloured.
IN the said comment while we commended the FDA we equally charged them to cast their net wide and also put more personnel on the field to be able to detect some of these harmful consumables before they do damage to all of us.
IT is in the light of the above that FDA’s assurance that there is no plastic rice on the Ghanaian market comes as a huge relief to Ghanaian consumers of rice. Obviously rice has come to stay as one of the staple foods in this country.
THUS the rumour on social media that some plastic rice have found their way onto the Ghanaian markets was indeed frightening.
IT is that rumour that has compelled the FDA to come out and clear the air regarding whether there is plastic rice on the market or not.
THANKFULLY, the state regulatory agency has assured us firmly that there is no plastic rice on our local market.
ADDRESSING a press conference in Accra last week, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of FDA, Mrs Delese Mimi Darko, did not only dismiss the plastic rice claim but also challenged anyone with information on or in possession of such rice to bring to them for verification.
IN our opinion we think that the challenge to anybody with information on plastic rice is very key to protecting the good number of Ghanaians who love to eat rice.
WE must do all we can to ensure that we are protected from these harmful foods.
AND that means that we all need to support with whatever information we have to ensure that we stay safe, at least from these harmful commodities.
THIS is why we still reiterate that the FDA must discharge its constitutional mandate without fear or favour.
WE believe strongly that this is one very vital way we will be safe from dangerous commodities that find their way onto the Ghanaian market
