The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has embarked on a clean-up exercise to climax the Food Safety Sensitization Week Programme at Aboabo Market in Tamale.
The Programme dubbed ‘Enhancing Food Security Through Safety Food Practices’ saw some staff of the FDA clean up the market area and sensitize some market women over food safety.
They also educated the women on the need to limit microbial contamination as well as avoid unhealthy practices and habits at the points of food preparation and sale.
Addressing the media, the Northern Regional Director for the Authority, Martin Kusi, stated the FDA will continue to periodically sensitise traders and food vendors on various market days to prevent contraction of diseases.
“So as part of our activities, we chose Aboabo Market to do this clean-up exercise to create awareness of food safety,” Mr Kusi said, “such that, we have to make sure that any food products that we buy from the market should be safe and good for human consumption.”
“So that we don’t contact any disease.”
He was optimistic the FDA will sustain the awareness to ensure people stick to the norms for a healthy society.
The FDA is mandated by law to provide and enforce standards for the sale of food, herbal medicinal products, cosmetics, drugs, medical devices and household chemical substances.
