All you need to know about Gyan’s Kayserispor deal…
Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan was given a befitting welcome by Kayserispor fans upon his arrival in Turkey after completing his move to the Anatolian Stars. The skipper appended his signature to the 2-year deal on Wednesday morning ending speculations on his long-term future.
Gyan, 31 became a free agent following the end of his loan spell with Al Ahli Dubai from Shanghai SIPG. Being a free agent, several clubs were in the race for his signature. Some of them include Bursaspor, who almost claimed the 31-year-old but couldn’t secure a deal after the two parties failed to reach an agreement.
However, the Black Stars skipper reached a common ground wth the Anatolian Stars. A statement on the club’s website read; “An agreement has been reached with world famous footballer Asamoah Gyan to join Kayserispor.”
The Turkish club signed a 2-year contract with the Ghanaian in the last meeting in Istanbul. The deal is believed to be worth 1.5 million euros annually. Also, Kayserispor has an option to renew his contract by one year per his performance.
Gyan’s Kayserispor deal means that the Black Stars all-time top scorer with 51 goals, has returned to Europe for the first time since 2011 when he made a shocking move from Sunderland in the English Premier League to Al Ain in UAE.
Asamoah Gyan joined UAE side Al Ahli on a one-year loan deal from Chinese side Shanghai SIPG. The Arabian Gulf League club got into contact with the 31-year old after he was unable to complete a deal with English Championship side Reading FC.
Having joined Shanghai SIPG in July 2015, for a huge fee of £227,000, Gyan’s constant injury problems meant he could only bag seven goals in 20 games overall.
For this reason, the Chinese side loaned him off to the UAE side to offload his multi-million dollar wages and also free up one of the four non-AFC federation spots in their squad. Having signed the loan deal at Al Ahli, Gyan was handed his iconic Jersey number 3 -a number he has won since his days at local club Liberty Professionals.
Upon his arrival, the Black Stars skipper was given a heroic welcome by fans of the side who were very excited about his transfer. The 31-year-old was carried shoulders high by fans of Kayserispor upon completing the 2-year deal with the Turkish top flight side.
Asamoah Gyan has ended a five-year absence from Europe after he left English club Sunderland in 2012. Kayserispor have finished just one place above the relegation zone in the Turkish top flight for the last two seasons.
Gyan is the all-time leading goalscorer of the Ghana national team, with 50 goals. The 31-year-old became the first Ghanaian player to hit 50 goals for his country during Ghana’s AFCON qualifier match against Ethiopia, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on June 11, 2017.
This remarkable feat saw the Black Stars skipper placing 35th on FIFA’s top scorers’ list, together with Netherlands’ all-time top scorer Van Persie and Bosnia & Herzegovina star Edin Dzeko. With 6 goals, Gyan is the top African goalscorer in the history of the World Cup.
