Ex Black stars player Michael Essien has been rated Chelsea’s second best African footballer of all times in the English Premier League by ESPN.
Former Chelsea striker/Ivory Coast star Didier Drogba and Nigeria John Obi Mikel were adjudged the first and third respectively in Africa in the EPL for Chelsea.
Lyon agreed a £24.4 million fee for Michael Essien, finally ending one of the longest-running transfer sagas. At the time, the fee made Essien Chelsea’s most expensive signing of all time, beating the £24 million they paid for Didier Drogba the previous summer.
He was a two-time Premier League champion with the Blues and also lifted the FA Cup on four occasions, making him one of the most decorated Ghanaians in the game.
On 13 March 2017, Essien joined the Indonesian club side Persib Bandung. He signed a deal with the option to extend his stay for a further 12 months at the end of the season. He inherited the number 5 shirt for the 2017 Liga 1 season, the same one he wore during his nine years at Chelsea.
