The Member of Parliament for Jomoro, Paul Essien has cut sod for the construction of seven circuit bungalows for Circuit Supervisors.
The gesture is part of efforts towards ensuring effective supervision by Circuit Supervisors to help reduce teacher absenteeism in the Jomoro District of the Western Region.
According to the MP, the roles of Circuit Supervisors are often hampered, especially in the area, due to lack of accommodation.
He said the supervisors are to serve as a mediator between parents, opinion leaders, teachers as well as pupils as enshrined in the education regulation.
But the Jomoro MP said effective monitoring of activities of teachers and pupils is absent since most of the circuit supervisors stay far from their catchment areas.
The project, which comprises of a two-bedroom and a hall with kitchen and toilet facilities, when completed, is expected to serve as a relief for the circuit supervisors in enhancing their activities.
The sod-cutting ceremony, which took place at Mangyean and Bonyere, marks the commencement of the first phase, which involves four bungalows while the remaining three will be constructed later in the year.
Mr Essien, who doubles as the Deputy Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, said he has a vision of improving education in his constituency. As a result, he requires proper monitoring of activities of teachers and pupils and he believes the project will help attain that.
He hopes to invest his MP’s common fund into the project, which will be completed before the end of his first tenure as MP.
The Jomoro Assistant Director of Education, Agatha Arthur, commended the Member of Parliament for the initiative.
She says it will help boast education in the area.
The Bonyere Circuit Supervisor of Education, Barry Mathias, admitted that lack of accommodation in his area of jurisdiction is a big worry to him and, so, expressed happiness over the gesture.
