Personnel of the National Service Association in the Eastern Region, today [Friday], joined the campaign to stop galamsey in the country.
As part of their Annual Delegates Conference ongoing in the Eastern Region, personnel of the Association from all the 10 regions on Friday morning marched through the principal streets of Koforidua with placards speaking against the canker, and raising awareness.
The group, numbering close to 800, clad in white and green national service t-shirts with bold inscriptions “Stop galamsey now” “say no to Galamsey” danced to brass band music shouting “Stop galamsey now.”
In an interview with Citi News, the Eastern Regional President of NASPA, Frimpong Borge, said it was time the service added their voice to the fight.
“It has come in good time to add our voice to the national campaign which has been championed by the media.”
“We have national service personnel in all the regions that have been badly affected by the activities of galamsey, our water bodies have been polluted; the environment has been depleted so it is time we join the campaign to stop galamsey now.”
Staff of Citi FM and volunteers were on some principal streets of Accra on Friday, to continue the #StopGalamseyNow campaign, this time with emphasis on creating awareness on the levels of pollution in water bodies across the country.
Citi FM launched the #StopGalamseyNow campaign about four weeks ago, in a bid to put pressure on government to stop such activities that are polluting water bodies and destroying the environment.
The #StopGalamseyNow campaign among others, demands of government to undertake five steps to clamp down on the menace.
* The total cessation of all small and medium scale mining for a period of six months
* The cessation of the issuance of new mining licenses for a year
* The reclassification of mining categories to reflect the use of new/larger equipment
* The allowance of water bodies to regenerate their natural ecology
