Education Ministry Announces Placement Helpline

The Ministry of Education has provided telephone numbers through which successful BECE candidates who were unable to find placement into any of the Senior High Schools under the Free SHS program via the internet could contact the ministry for solutions.

Parents and students across the country have been frustrated by the inability to find senior high schools for qualified candidates who participated in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination.

But a recent report from 3News reveal that the ministry has announced a helpline through which the various problems being encountered could be addressed.

According to the announcement which was made today being Tuesday, September 5, persons having problems with the free SHS enrollment can now communicate with the appropriate quarters by calling the following hotline – 0302747778  or sending whatsapp message to 0207407499.

Despite the fact that the Ghana Education Service (GES) promised to place all successful BECE candidates in Senior High Schools of their choice, the Service could not fulfill the promise as they revealed on Friday September 1 that out of the number of candidates who sat for the BECE “267,327 candidates secured places in schools of their choice.

The GES is however, giving the remaining 150,770 candidates a second opportunity to make fresh choices, with the reapplication deadline being midnight of Thursday, September 7, 2017. Qualified senior high school students who were not placed by the Computerized Selection and Placement System are expected to complete the re-application before the deadline.

However, a lot of candidates have not been able to re-register themselves due to network challenges. The two different websites – www.myjhsresult.net and www.csssps.gov.gh provided by the Education Ministry on 1st and 5th September respectively have not been active, making it impossible for the unplaced candidates to reapply.

It appears the websites are not able to stand the huge traffic trying to access information from their servers as prospective students rush to beat the deadline. This development is currently causing worries and anxiety among parents and their wards.

The Education Ministry has however, assured one and all that there is no cause for worry as every successful BECE candidate must be posted in no distant time. They are also assured that every one of them will benefit from the Free SHS program.

The much-talked-about Free SHS Program was introduced by the new Akufo-Addo led NPP government. Although the immediate past Mahama led NDC administration during their time in office appeared to be working towards a similar goal, they were not able to put it in place. But from all indications, the present government is committed to seeing the policy implemented.

The Free Senior High School Policy simply means: no tuition fees, no admission fees, no library fees, no science centre fees, no computer laboratory fees, no examination fees, no utility fees and all the other charges. It also means free textbooks, free boarding and free meals and day students will get a meal at school for free. Click here to get full details of the policy.
