The sick cannot be sent to the the Dunkwa Government Hospital at Dunkwa-on-Offin in the Central Region following a heavy downpour in the area on Saturday.
Taxi drivers say they fear they could be swept away by the volume of water that had covered the road linking the biggest hospital in the area.
Many residents have also been rendered homeless in suburbs such as Accra Town and Sofokrom as many homes have been partially covered by the flood.
Some residents who have been able to gather some belongings are appealing to local authorities and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in the municipality to assist them with accommodation and other needs.
Though there has not been any heavy rainfall today in the area, the flood came about when the River Offin overflowed its banks following an increase in its volume from continuous rainfall upstream in the Ashanti Region.
However, residents have attributed the unfortunate impact to the results of illegal mining activities, popularly called ‘galamsey,’ in and along the banks of the river.
They say the various diversions of the river’s course by galamsey operators made the large volume of water in the river spill onto nearby lands, ending up in flooding.
Officers of the Upper Denkyira East Municipal NADMO are currently assessing the damage caused in order to properly assist victims of the flood.
Meanwhile three hundred and twenty-two persons were rendered homeless and sixty-seven houses affected when floods hit Agona Nyakrom and Agona Swedru in the Agona West Municipality on Thursday and Friday.
The floods that affected a total of 1,134 residents cut off Agona Nyakrom from Agona Swedru and Agona Nsabaa which are its principal neighbours, and brought many activities to a standstill in the area.
NADMO officials say though there was no heavy rainfall in the area, River Akora received a large volume of water from upstream sources in the Eastern Region and it overflowed its banks.
