He made the disclosure on Wednesday, November 1, while speaking in an interview with Starr Chat host, Bola Ray. Dr. Spio-Grabrah’s comments come to confirm earlier hints that the former Ghana Ambassador to the United States and Mexico is interested in the presidency.
The politician and former diplomat pointed out that he has all it takes to win the NDC presidential flagbearing slot ahead of the 2020 general elections.
Responding to whether he has the ability to beat former President John Mahama if he decides to contest, Dr. Spio-Garbrah said: “I am not there to beat anybody, I am there to present myself and win regardless of who is there…everybody goes into a race to win.”

Also speaking on the same issue to Joy News’ Gifty Andoh Appiah on Thursday, November 2, Ekwo Spio-Garbrah continued to stress that he has all the qualities necessary for an NDC presidential candidate.
“…by God’s grace I am alive, I am well, I am a healthy man, I am happy, I have my potentials, I have my capacities, why would any right-thinking person think that I could not or should not be a candidate for the leadership of the party?” Mr Garbrah quizzed.
Since after the 2016 general elections, the NDC has been under tension regarding what led to the humiliating defeat they suffered in the hands of previously opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
One of the most hotly debated issue in the party has been if ousted President John Mahama will be allowed a second chance to bear the party’s flag in the NDC 2020 race. It is however, not yet clear if Mahama is personally interested in vying for the Presidency once again. Rumours on the possibility of the former president returning for the presidency has remained contradictory.
However, the now opposition NDC has no other option than to move on and hope for a better tomorrow. The party therefore goes to congress in 2018 to elect new leaders ahead of the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections.
Meanwhile, there are hints that numerous party member are warming up for the presidential position in the next election. Aside Dr Spio-Garbrah, some other alleged presidential aspirants include Nadowli West MP, Alban Bagbin, Ablekuma South MP and former Accra Mayor, Okoe Vanderpuije and Professor Joshua Alabi.
