Allotey Jacobs, the Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress has called for the dissolution of the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO).
According to him, it would best to combine the Bureau of National Investigations and the Criminal Investigation Department, as they both perform the same duties as EOCO.
Mr Jacobs argued that the institution needed to be scrapped as it was incompetent and was full of constant internal conflicts.
Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show, the NDC chairman said, “EOCO is only overlapping in their operations and I think they are only taking orders from Kennedy Agyapong and so I will suggest that the institution is dissolved as soon as possible.
Who reported the matter to EOCO because GRA is even saying something different contrary to EOCO’s report? They (EOCO) are doing the same work as BNI and it’s the same people in those institutions and if they are dissolved, then I think it will help.”
Mr Jacobs further said EOCO’s probe into Ibrahim Mahama is an indirect attack on former President Mahama. He stated that the NDC is however, poised to defend Ibrahim’s interests.
A few days ago, the brother of former president John Mahama, was invited for questioning at the headquarters of EOCO, where he was allegedly interrogated for close to 8 hours.
He was brought in on charges of tax defaults and issuing 44 dud cheques to the Ghana Revenue Authority to offset the debts incurred by his imported goods at the Tema port.
Ibrahim has been ordered to pay over GHC 12 million to the GRA or will have his goods confiscated and auctioned off by the state.
