Leading French sports equipment and sportswear company, Decathlon, has opened the largest sports store in Ghana.
The store, which is located at the Junction Mall in Nungua, Accra, is by all standards the biggest sports store in West Africa.
The store, which occupies a 1,245 square meter area, also provides over 3,000 products across 40 sports ranging from football, basketball, swimming and cycling to lesser known sports such as archery, hiking, kayaking and more.
Speaking at the launch, Minister of Trade and Industry, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, commended Decathlon for the ground-breaking project in Ghana and highlighted the importance of the project on the relationship between Ghana and France.
“I want to commend Decathlon for making this investment in Ghana. If you have one of the leading companies in the world putting their faith in Ghana, then it means there must be something good about Ghana,” he said.
He added that “Ghana and France have had diplomatic ties for several decades and this will be enriched by the good work Decathlon has done here.”
Earlier, Country Manager of Decathlon Ghana, Kwasi Tabury, said; ‘We are very excited to be making history in Ghana in my own country where Decathlon is really needed because we can change lives of many people.”
Mr. Tabury explained that the mandate of Decathlon is to make sports accessible and affordable to every person irrespective of age, sex or creed in Ghana.
“I truly look forward to seeing Ghanaians take up sports as an everyday activity and try out new sports, new exercises as we introduce a wide array of sports to the Ghanaian market,” he said.
He further revealed the company’s plans of establishing factories in Ghana to facilitate the production of sportswear in the country.
“Production for us is key. And for us to provide quality at low prices we have to decrease the cost of production,” he said.
“It is our plan to set up factories all over the country, to enable us decrease our prices and make sports accessible all over the country,” he added.
For his part, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr. Hadzide, said sports should be for everybody because of its significance, and that his outfit was interested in the initiative.
He said Ghana was challenged with sports equipment and the presence of the shop in Ghana was a relief and commended the country manager for the initiative.
With its affordable prices of products, Decathlon offers sports users two (2) year warranty on all their products.
