Former President John Kufuor has bemoaned the increasing number of lawless acts recorded across the country in recent months.
He explained that Ghana is a country governed by laws and thus citizens must adhere to all rules and stipulated constitutional provisions to ensure that sanity prevails.
Citing the recent cases of lynching recorded across the country, the former President condemned the acts.
He described the lynching of late Captain Mahama as disheartening and gross disrespect to the laws of the country.
“The death of Captain Mahama was a sad one and a tragic incident. He was an asset to the country but he was brutally lynched, but that’s not the only incident of lawlessness. There have been recorded cases all around the country. This is not what we want for the country, it’s a dent on our image. We need to learn to be law-abiding” he advised
Former President Kufuor appealed to Ghanaians to trust the security agencies and other bodies set up to ensure law and order.
He insisted that no citizen is above the law and must, therefore, report any offense to the relevant authorities for the law to take its course.
“We are a democratic State and so we have laws that govern us. No one is above the law, not even the president. If there is someone you identify to have gone against the laws report the person to the police and then he will be processed. If he is found guilty, the Courts will also do what is required of them. We need to trust the institutions to work” he remarked
Captain Mahama was lynched to death at Denkyira Obuasi in the Upper Denkyira West District of the Central Region on suspicion by residents of the community after they mistook him for an armed robber.
The sad incident occurred on Monday 29th May and is expected to be buried on Friday 9th June at the military cemetery in Accra after a State burial.
The President has posthumously promoted him to the rank of a Major and donated a sum of GHC50,000 to the family.
