The Regent of Dagbon in the Northern Region, Kampakuya Naa Andani Yakubu, has asked the Aviation Ministry to take steps to protect the 6,000 acres land earmarked for the construction of airdrome in the Yendi Municipality.
He particularly wants a fence constructed on the land to protect it from encroachers to avoid any people from encroaching on the land like the previous ones given the Ghana Airports Company.
The 6,000 acre-land located on the Yendi-Zabzugu road is the third land awarded the Ghana Airports Company for the construction of an airdrome to serve as an emergency landing site in the region.
“I charge you and the Ghana Airports Company to take steps to protect this third land from encroachers, the first which was given some decades ago have been encroached and usually it’s difficult to evacuate people after they have settled on a land.
“The second land which I inspected together with Mr Michael Omane-Mensah [Manager of the Tamale International Airport] was rejected because of its proximity to settlement thus there was the need to provide a third alternate land which I have provided so it’s your turn to protect what has been given you” Naa Andani Yakubu said.
The chief made the call when the Aviation Minister Cecilia Abena Dapaah together with her deputy Mr Darko Mensah and some officers of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority paid a courtesy call on the Regent and his elders as part of their visit to the various aviation sites in the Northern Region.
Mr. Omane-Mensah indicted the third land will be protected immediately as the aviation authority is poised to ensuring the construction of airstrips where it is necessary.
Mrs Cecilia Abena Dapaah revealed government’s commitment to opening up the entire country to other countries as the catalyst to development.
“The President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo’s vision is to open up the rest of Ghana to business opportunities and that involves the construction of new airstrips and reconstructing even colonial airstrips to serve as the catalyst for improving Ghana’s economy,” she said
