The annual Sports Fiesta by the Kaneshie Area Youth Ministry of The Church of Pentecost was at its glamorous best last week as it seals off the 2017 Easter festivities.
For three years running, the Area Youth Ministry under the leadership of the Area Youth Pastor, Rev. Daniel Okyei Boakye has been hosting youth from 20 Districts, Worship Centers and a PIWC to socialise through fun games. The fiesta is also use to highlight and celebrate the resurrection power of Jesus Christ aimed at winning more souls to their fold.
Like the previous years, the 2017 fiesta did not disappoint as the teams hotly competed for trophies and medals to the excitement of thousands of patrons. The fun-packed event held on Easter Monday saw Bubiashe District being crowned the Overall Best team based on points it gathered from the various disciplines including football, volley ball and Table Tennis. It obtained a total of 23 points ahead of tournament favourite Shalom who garnered 20 points.
Addressing the teeming youth at the Accra Academy school park, the Kaneshie Area Head of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Emmanuel Achim Gyimah lauded the idea behind the Sports Fiesta.
He noted that, the youth forms about 60% of the Church’s population. Expressing his excitement about the huge turnout, the Area Head said God’s hand is upon the youth and therefore advised them to allow God to take control of their lives and use them for greater works.
He encouraged the playing team to use such events to nurture their skills.
The football which was at the centre of attraction saw a titanic clash between Shalom Worship Centre and Mataheko District at the finals. It did not come as a surprise though when the lads from Shalom who exhibited dexterity throughout the tournament, eventually outclassing their opponents netting two straight unanswered goals.
Prince Okine from Shalom was adjudged the Overall Best Player of the tournament – Football.
In other games, Augustine Hagan from Anorhuma District defeated Isaac Twum of Bubiashe District to lift the Table Tennis trophy for his side. Athletics was suspended for this year’s event because the venue was not friendly for that discipline due to ongoing renovation there.
The day also failed to produce winners for the Volley Ball because most teams who made it to the semi-finals demonstrated high level of experience which pushed the discipline deep into the evening forcing the organisers to call it off through a consensus.
