Police personnel at the Suame Divisional Police Command of the Ghana Police Service in the Ashanti Region were thrown into a state of grief on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 when news got to them that one of their colleagues had shot himself to death.
Lance Corporal Ebenezer Okyere, believed to be 35 years of age, was said to have shot himself in the early hours of yesterday at his private residence at Old Tafo in the Kumasi metropolis.
Co-tenants in the house who spoke to this reporter said the deceased’s girlfriend was heard shouting for help to stop him from taking his own life.
“His girlfriend came out of the room to tell us that he [the deceased] received a phone call after which his mood changed, and subsequently ended his life,” they said.
According to the tenants, the late police officer ordered his girlfriend to leave the room which the lady obliged.
Immediately she left, his co-tenants said they heard a gunshot from his room only to go inside and found the Lance Corporal lying lifeless in his sofa.
His nephew, Mark Boateng, who was weeping uncontrollably, appealed to the police to investigate the source of the call and what the caller actually told his uncle.
“I have been living with my uncle and there is nothing wrong with him as I know, so I am appealing to the police to investigate the call very well,” Mark said.
The body of the deceased has since been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital morgue.
