Legalizing Homosexuality in Ghana – LGBT in Ghana appears oblivious to the massively mixed reactions that followed Nana Addo’s seeming approval of homosexuality; as they have continued to jubilate over the development.
Nana Addo in an interview with Aljazeera made the point that although the pressure to legalize homosexuality is not that severe, Ghana is likely to legalize same-sex marriage in the future.

The President said that legalisation of homosexuality is bound to happen in Ghana if public opinion for its legalisation grows stronger.
“I don’t believe that in Ghana, so far, a sufficiently strong coalition has emerged which is having that impact on public opinion that will say: ‘Change it [the law], let’s then have a new paradigm in Ghana… I think it is something that is bound to happen like elsewhere in the world, they are activities of individuals or groups,” he said.
Ghana’s LGBTQI association have congratulated the president and have expressed high hopes towards its full actualization.
Meanwhile, negative comments from different stakeholders have flooded various media platforms with many questioning the possible motive behind Nana Addo’s gay statements.
Clergymen, as expected, championed the negative comments and called for a reinforcement of the ban on homosexuality in Ghana.
International Evangelist and President of the Worldwide Miracle Outreach, Rev. Dr. Lawrence Tetteh strongly rejected the idea of legalizing homosexuality in Ghana.
Commenting on the issue on Morning Starron November 27, Rev. Dr Tetteh warned that legalising homosexuality in Ghana will bring about so much tragedy in the country.
He said this citing many health and social consequences faced in countries like the UK where the act has been legalised.
I know the tragedy, the pain and the frustration that people are going through in the UK [where the act has been legalised]. Men are wearing pampers and I am a pastor and I pray for some of them
That was his candid opinion. But leader and founder of the Ghana Freedom Party Akua Donkor was even more candid and blunt when she rebuked president Nana Addo for being rash about such a sensitive issue.
Speaking with Ghanacrusader.com, the farmer turned politician even went as far as accusing Nana Addo and his vice, Mahamudu Bawumia of being gay partners.
She said it was quite unfortunate that Ghana’s president expressed optimism for the legalization of homosexuality in the near future.
Association of Gays, Lesbians in Ghana to Embark on Peace March in Accra
Meanwhile, Ghana’s gay community is planning on embarking on a “peace walk” to thank President Akufo-Addo for his recent statement on homosexuals.
According to a statement released by the group, there will be a peaceful Movement Walk on Friday 15th December 2017 from Obra Spot to the Flagstaff house to thank the President Akufo Addo and his government and present the mission and vision of the LGBTQI Movement.
The fight for the legalization of LGBT has continued to linger as more groups have joined in the tussle. Homosexuals in Ghana have no choice but to stay unnoticed as they are often victims of various forms of stigma and brutality.
For this very reason, members of the gay community often risk their lives to move out of the country in order to get married or freely live their lives.
Earlier in August, a group of 8 Ghanaians in Canada sought out signatures to pressurize government of Ghana to respect the rights of the LGBT community.
The group who said that said that insults and threats will not stop them from continuing their activism attracted several tongue lashings from Ghanaians.
